15 Best Sci-Fi Movie Sequels EVER

13. The Purge: Anarchy

Aliens Sigourney Weaver
Universal Pictures

Of all the flicks on this list, this 2015 follow-up to 2013’s passable home invasion sci-fi thriller may be the biggest improvement on its predecessor, but it’s also simply a superb fusion of horror, action, thriller, and sci-fi satire.

Most viewers of the Blumhouse-produced original agreed that, as effective as the flick was, it wasted a superb premise by focusing on a lone upper class family and their gated community during the annual crime-filled free-for-all of purge night. This sequel, starring a gruff and agreeably angsty Frank Grillo, gives us a glimpse of Purge night for the have-nots, i.e the rest of us who don’t own security systems more expensive than most houses.

What follows is a razor-sharp satire which it’s surprising to see warmly welcomed by American audiences, given how frank and fearless its condemnation of the country’s elites is. Maybe the fast-paced ultraviolent action helps, since the film is filled with pulse-pounding chases and fights for those uninterested in dissecting America’s class struggle.
