15 Best Sci-Fi Movies On Netflix Right Now

How best to fill a Sci-Fi fan's time in confinement...

Blade Runner
Warner Bros.

With our daily lives now dictated by Covid-19 and with many of us in lockdown or self-isolation, we're turning more and more to streaming services to fill the extra time we've found ourselves having to spend indoors.

Netflix is one of the biggest and best streaming services available and there's currently a wealth of great (and not so great) content to discover. There's so much content in fact, that finding something decent to watch can mean an evening of endless scrolling through titles until something either jumps out at us or we just give up and go to bed.

As science fiction is a particularly daunting genre category to wade through, we've mined the mountains of content on offer and picked out 15 of the best sci-fi movies available on Netflix right now.

15. Annihilation

Blade Runner
Netflix

A smartly scripted and well-acted slow-burn sci-fi/horror where a group of scientists enter a mysterious quarantined zone known as "The Shimmer", an area where plants and animals are being biologically mutated by an unknown alien presence.

Despite being written and directed by Alex Garland (hot off the back of his debut feature Ex Machina) and featuring an excellent female cast, Annihilation flopped at the box office, presumably because there were no flying superheroes involved.

The sometimes ambiguous story and dreamlike visuals won't be for everyone but there are some genuinely horrifying and memorable moments on offer.

Annihilation deserves to be remembered as one of the best science fiction films of the past decade.
