Ex Machina, the debut feature from Alex Garland, earned a slew of awards nominations on release, firmly establishing the writer/director as one to watch. It's a clever story about robots and artificial intelligence that also delves into more disturbing avenues of madness and violent horror as it progresses.
The special effects are a big talking point and they really are stunning but it's the engaging performances from the primary cast that elevates Ex Machina to the status of essential viewing. In particular, Oscar Isaac's larger-than-life portrayal of genius roboticist Nathan Bateman is distinctly unforgettable.
This is another modern science fiction film that will be remembered as one of the best of the 2010s.
