3. Devs
Inquisitiveness is one of the foundations upon which this genre was built. The notion that we, as human beings, stop every once in a while and question the things, conventions and elements around us has fascinated creative minds for centuries. 'Why' is this the way it is, 'What if? it were possible to [insert impossible event here]'; it's all part of the very nature of science fiction, and one new arrival this year that really grasped that is Devs.
Much like Westworld, the FX/Hulu series isn't afraid to make its characters think outside the box, and by extension, we're forced to do the same. As for what it's actually about? Well, that's where things get a little more complicated, and that's where the show's charm lies.
It centers on a software engineer who begins to investigate the mysterious death of her boyfriend at Devs and it slowly finds itself unfolding into a labyrinth of thought-provoking mayhem that explores the determinism vs. free will schools of thought and leaves us asking questions we may never have asked without it.
It's undoubtedly a heavy watch and its slow-moving narrative won't be for everyone, but it's impossible not to admire the creativity behind such a production (the magic of Alex Garland), and the performances of everyone involved - especially Nick Offerman - makes it a gripping watch. In fact, it's so innovative that this writer has no problem guaranteeing that it will still be on 'Best of' lists come the end of the year.
