2. The Invisible Man

A retelling of H.G. Wells' timeless novel, The Invisible Man opened only a couple of weeks before movie theatres around the globe were forced to shut down. But in that short space of time, everyone was talking about it, as the sci-fi horror film gripped audiences - so much so that it made an impressive $128 million against its small $7 million budget. And its success was well and truly warranted.

An inventive reinterpretation of its classic source material, the film starred Elisabeth Moss as a woman convinced that her abusive (and, y'know, dead) ex-boyfriend has mastered the art of becoming invisible and has taken it upon himself to use his newfound abilities to stalk her. Of course, nobody believes the poor woman and a descent into apparent insanity begins as Moss gives us what might just be the performance of her career - and considering we're talking about the star of The Handmaid's Tale here, that's really saying something.

Even with the source material like that behind it, it's hard for a horror flick to stand out in today's day and age of B-movie slashers. And yet, there was something strangely eloquent about The Invisible Man, highlighting that a tired old genre can still produce something remarkably new (even if its based on something remarkably old). It does everything this very genre was created to do and, thanks to an innovative script that forces you to question everything, it's a tought-provoking tale that nothing short of chilling.
