An event over a decade in the making, it's hard to fully put into words just how excited fans were for Star Trek: Picard. Not only was the series another entry in the classic Star Trek franchise (reason enough for being excited), it saw the legendary Patrick Stewart reprise his most famous role as the iconic Jean-Luc Picard returned to our screens (and our hearts) for the first time in nearly 20 years.

But what makes Picard so special? Is it the fact that it gives us a rare chance to catch up with one of TV's most beloved characters? Is it the special effects? Is it the return of some of our other fave Star Trek regulars? Well, yes and no. It's all of that and none of it.

Without getting too philosophical, what this writer means is that the CBS All Access series has so much to offer, that it's impossible to single out what makes it so compelling. It's certainly a rare breed of sci-fi series in that it prioritises the deeper, character-driven narratives over the dazzling visuals and action sequences (that was what The Next Generation was for), and that makes it easier to get invested.

Does it struggle to get the pacing right? Occasionally, but with Stewart's masterful performance guiding it even in its slow moments, it never drags.

An absolute must-watch for Trekkies, Picard is a gripping character-driven affair that was worth the two-decade wait.
