The MCU hasn't bound itself to realism, but some science is more mind-blowing than others. A high powered metal suit is far more believable than, let's say, a particle that allows the wielder to change the size of physical objects. Here enters Hank Pym.

Pym is a etymologist and physicists that worked with SHIELD after World War 2 as a consultant. During his tenure, he discovered Pym Particles, extra-dimensional subatomic particles that enable size alteration.

This discovery led to the creation of the Ant-Mann suit and made him a perfect soldier and spy for SHIELD. After a mission that resulted in the disappearance of his wife, Janet Van Dyne, he left SHIELD to start Pym Tech.

At Pym Tech, he continued his work with Pym Particles hoping to bring his wife back from the quantum realm, a space beyond our understanding of time and physics. His mission to bring Janet home has made him the world's foremost expert on the quantum realm.

Hank also adopts a young protégé by the name of Darren Cross. Due to the inherit danger of the science, Pym kept the particle close to the chest, causing Cross to become resentful and for Pym out of his own company. At the cost of his mental stability, Cross was able to rediscover the Pym Particle and become the Yellow Jacket.

We have seen users of Pym Particles grow over a hundred feet tall and shrink to sizes smaller than atoms. This science changes our understanding of reality and may even save the universe some day soon.
