6. Green Zone

Fury 2014
Universal Pictures

2010's war action Green Zone takes place in Baghdad, as a team of US soldiers are sent after "hidden" weapons of mass destruction.

This typical action movie write up does not fully do the film justice, though. Starring Matt Damon, Greg Kinnear, Jason Isaacs and Brendan Gleeson, there's no question that it's an explosive and sometimes cliched action flick, which is equally parts exciting and familiar, but thanks to sub-plots following government corruption off the battlefield and a widespread scandal on US soil, Green Zone is also a refreshing take on the action-thrillers of its time.

Strongly performed and expertly choreographed, director Paul Greengrass (teaming up with Damon once more after the Bourne franchise) makes up for a simple main storyline with shocking twists and stunning moments of action, which work well with the story and never seem implausible or over the top.

Well worth a watch if you like your war movies more on the modern side, Green Zone is an excellent addition to the genre and a thrilling bit of cinema.
