7. Bridge Of Spies
A war movie about the Cold War is always going to be a difficult endeavour. With no major battles and no violent conflict, it probably won't come as a shock that this Cold War movie takes a step back from the typical tropes of the war genre and focuses on the interplay between both sides of the quiet, tense conflict.
Using Tom Hanks and an Oscar-winning Mark Rylance to represent the two sides of the war, Bridge of Spies forms around its characters an intense and disarming mystery.
Brilliantly acted, seamlessly shot and written with typical power by the Coen Brothers, it's one of Steven Spielberg's greatest later career efforts, which beautifully illustrates the friction of the Cold War by honing in on one of its neglected incidents.
Rylance took home the Oscar for his role, and Hanks really should have been at least nominated, and frankly it's worth watching for the pair alone.
