12. Battle: Los Angeles

Fury 2014
Columbia Pictures

If you're after something that isn't based in history and takes you on an epic, action-packed journey through the streets of LA during an alien invasion, then look no further than Jonathan Liebesman's 2011 film Battle: Los Angeles.

Starring Aaron Eckhart as a Marine Sergeant, the film follows a group of soldiers as they take to the streets of LA in hopes of repelling a new alien threat.

With a cast rounded out by Michael Pena, Michelle Rodriguez and Bridget Moynahan, it's a surprisingly affecting sci-fi action drama despite its borderline B-movie write up. The action is fast and relentless, the effects are well realised and the story, though predictable and occasionally cliched, makes the whole picture a really exciting leave-your-brain-at-the-door war film.

Don't go in expecting an Apocalypse Now, but for its plot and action it's well worth a watch.
