I don't know what Warner Bros. expected when they drafted in Guy Ritchie to direct a new adaptation of the King Arthur legend. Sure, the filmmaker had proven he could weave his charms into the Sherlock Holmes mythos to the tune of big bucks, but his brand of cockney charm doesn't exactly fit with a grand story like King Arthur.

The end result was predictably confused, but in an endearing way. The film had its charm, mixing Lord of the Rings-style set-pieces with character-driven humour and cutaways, but was far too strange and messy to be a mainstream hit.

That didn't stop Warners from throwing money at it though, $170 million in fact, which made the $18 million the film took in its opening weekend a total disaster. When all was said and done, the flick lost $150 million - essentially the cost of a lower-end DC superhero project.
