You have to feel sorry for Peter Jackson. While he made some of the most profitable, acclaimed and fan adored fantasy movies with the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, the accomplished director has struggled to match that success in the following years.

The Hobbit couldn't capture the same magic - though that was largely out of Jackson's hands - while his passion projects have failed to resonate with movie goers as well.

He didn't direct Mortal Engines, but his name was heavily leveraged in the marketing. Sadly, it wasn't enough to get LOTR fans away from their extended edition Blu Ray sets and into theatres.

In fact, the film ended up being the first warning of a particularly harsh year at the box office to come. The movie made just over half of its $150 million budget back, and is now considered one of the worst bombs not only of the year, but all time, with a loss as high as $175 million.
