We didn't get any Doctor Strange news this year, but that's likely because Marvel hadn't finalized negotiations with the film's hopeful leading man: three-time Academy Award nominee Joaquin Phoenix. Phoenix hasn't landed the role, but according to several sources, he has entered active negotiations. This isn't the first time his name has come up for a comic book film, as he was recently rumored to play both Lex Luthor in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Doctor Doom in Fantastic Four, roles that ultimately went to Jesse Eisenberg and Toby Kebbell, respectively. Benedict Cumberbatch was recently rumored to be on Marvel's wishlist for Strange, but denied those rumors himself at SDCC. Others connected to the role are The Dark Knight Rises star Tom Hardy, Academy Award winner Jared Leto, and The Leftovers star Justin Theroux. According to the new reports, Phoenix's name is the one with the most force behind it right now, and chances are good that he'll take the role. We might not have gotten an announcement at SDCC, but keep your eyes peeled for this announcement, which should come any day now.
