15 Biggest Unresolved Plot Holes In Harry Potter
9. The Basilisk’s Ability To Move Around Undetected
The Chamber of Secrets features one of the most terrifying creatures in the Harry Potter series – the Basilisk. During Harry’s second year, this massive snake petrifies a number of muggle-born students and creates an atmosphere of terror inside the castle.
Though it is never revealed how she came to this conclusion, Hermione realises the Basilisk is using the plumbing to manoeuvre around Hogwarts, and this rather feeble explanation raises a number of issues.
Firstly, how big are the pipes inside Hogwarts? Does the entire castle contain a labyrinth of unnaturally-large piping fit for the Basilisk to move through? And there aren’t sizeable openings to the sewage system dotted around the school. So how did the Basilisk manage to petrify its victims without being seen?
The only known way in or out of the Chamber of Secrets is via Moaning Myrtle’s Bathroom. In order to attack isolated muggle-born students, therefore, the Basilisk would have to travel through the corridors of the castle as well as the plumbing. As such, it’s hard to believe nobody spotted such a large creature from behind at some point.
