15 Chilling Movie Villains That Are Harrowing To Watch
2. Tommy DeVito - Goodfellas
This one gives psychopaths a bad name.
Tommy DeVito, based upon a similarly appalling real-life gangster, is a genuinely terrifying character. A man who psychologically torments his own friend during the now infamous 'Funny how?' scene, which is still one of the scariest moments in a non-horror film ever, and repeatedly murders people purely because they mildly annoyed him, Tommy is a horrible figure. Character actor Joe Pesci, who gave a masterful performance, won a much-deserved Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the film.
Tommy is a low-key, seemingly normal figure some of the time but when he erupts into violence, he's a complete monster. A rage-filled, nasty and intensely ugly figure, there is nothing charismatic or likable about Tommy. He is a simply vile human being who makes every scene he's in highly uncomfortable.
Interestingly, this was the same year as Pesci's light-hearted villainous turn in Home Alone. After seeing this horrifying role it'll be hard to ever look at Home Alone the same way again. Joe Pesci is reuniting with Martin Scorsese in the upcoming The Irishman and while that's great news, it's hard to imagine they'll be able to top Tommy DeVito.
