15 Chilling Movie Villains That Are Harrowing To Watch

1. Frank Booth - Blue Velvet

Joker Scars Dark Knight
De Laurentiis Entertainment Group

Blue Velvet is an unbearably terrifying film about the darkness lurking within ordinary suburbia and, from the beginning, everything single moment is constructed in the most discomforting way possible. It's already frightening, but enter Dennis Hopper's Frank Booth and the film becomes a true nightmare.

The center of Lumberton, North Carolina's criminal underworld, Frank is the film's embodiment of evil within suburbia. A vile, rage-filled and sickening psychopath who murders without remorse, rapes women while inhaling stimulants and even lobotomizes a man at one point, Frank is so hateful he'll make your skin crawl. He's truly the worst of humanity.

Frank is ultimately a symbolic character. He isn't given motivations, backstory or redeeming qualities; rather, he's a full-on and unhinged representation of evil. Many villains over the years have been ruined by being too over-the-top but Frank's over-the-top nature makes him all the more terrifying as an extreme epitome of just how terrible mankind can be.

Lacking in the slightest bit of likability or decency, Frank is grotesque and monstrous beyond measure. Backed up by Dennis Hopper's intense and horrifying performance, Frank is an unforgettably harrowing representation of the darkness within man and arguably the scariest movie villain of them all.
