15 Cinema Legends You Won't Believe Have Never Won Oscars

12. Alfred Hitchcock

He's an icon of cinema who's spawned biopics about his legend, but Alfred Hitchcock never received an Oscar, despite being six-time nominated. Arguably the closest he ever came was in 1940 for Rebecca; the movie had an incredible eleven nominations, but only won two (Outstanding Production and Best Cinematography, Black and White). Hitchcock himself was beaten by John Ford (The Grapes Of Wrath) in the Best Director category, and perhaps most surprisingly, he lost again twenty years later for his work on the seminal Psycho, instead beaten by Billy Wilder for The Apartment. It just goes to show that often, incredible works of art are only appreciated long after we've had time to digest them. Despite his Oscars injustice, Hitchcock has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire just four months before he died. You win some, you lose some, it would seem.

Mark White hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
