10. Toothless Kills Stoick - How To Train Your Dragon 2
When the villainous Drago Bludvist (Djimon Hounsou) summons the Alpha dragon, he's able to take control of any dragons in the vicinity, including Hiccup's (Jay Baruchel) buddy Toothless. Toothless doesn't recognise Hiccup and fires a blast at him, at which point Hiccup's father Stoick (Gerard Butler) dives in the way of the shot, saving his son's life. Hiccup checks on his dad, but it's too late, and he's already dead. Stoick finally snaps out of the Alpha's trance and goes to check on Stoick, but a distraught Hiccup angrily tells him to leave, at which point Drago once again takes control of Toothless and rides him away. Though the first How to Train Your Dragon made it clear that DreamWorks weren't pulling any punches with this series (after all, how many animated films have a protagonist who loses his foot?), it was still a pretty damn devastating moment to see Butler's loveable father figure die in such unsentimental fashion. There's no prolonged, emotional dying speech: just death followed by a Viking funeral. While brilliantly wrought, it's no doubt going to cause a lot of upset with any kids who see it.
