15 Crazy Facts You Have To Accept To Enjoy Star Wars Movies
8. Frozen In Carbonite - The End?
If you can recall from the beginning of this list, the original Star Wars was pretty much tied up in a neat bow without too many expectations for sequels. As it turns out, Harrison Ford also didn't have too many expectations for sequels, having only signed up for one film, unlike Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill.
After the success of Star Wars, Ford decided to come back for Empire Strikes Back, but continued to hold off signing on for a third flick. Due to the uncertainty surrounding Ford's willingness to return for the third one, Han Solo was frozen in carbonite as a way of writing the character off without effectively killing him.
The character could have very well stayed frozen forever as Ford had just become an even bigger star in Hollywood by appearing in Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. It took much convincing and negotiating to get Ford back on for the third film, with his bargaining chip being that character would be killed off in a self-sacrificing manner during the Battle of Endor.
As many know, Ford's stipulation didn't pan out with a happier ending being more suited for the children's audience. Nevertheless, the whole fiasco resulted in the massive prologue in Return of the Jedi, where they free Han from Jabba. What started as a contract dispute turned into some of the franchise's most memorable moments. Who would have guessed?
