It's becoming increasingly commonplace in Hollywood blockbusters for CGI to be used in order to de-age actors for flashbacks, and though the Marvel Cinematic Universe in particular has gotten rather good at pulling it off, a decade ago the results weren't quite so impressive.

X-Men: The Last Stand opened with a flashback featuring Professor Xavier and Magneto two decades prior, and so a digital solution was employed to make Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen appear younger.

Though it was an admirable attempt, ultimately the effects just weren't convincing enough, making the actors resemble disturbing CGI puppet recreations of themselves rather than believable younger equivalents.

It falls straight into the uncanny valley, and derails what was otherwise a pretty neat scene.
