Consensus: "The Brothers Grimsby showers viewers with a steady stream of Sacha Baron Cohen's edgy humor, but too many gags hit the wrong side of the line between audacious and desperate."
Grimsby's not great but it's not nearly as bad as many say, It's definitely better than the insufferable The Dictator.
Grimsby is hit-or-miss, overly sentimental and loses momentum as it goes along, but it's still a perfectly enjoyable movie. It's led by the ever-brilliant Mark strong and the talented (if inconsistent) Sacha Baron Cohen, who make a good double-act which immediately elevates the film.
The action is entertaining and the jokes, although inconsistent, can be very funny. The film was criticized for being too much in terms of the humor, but the extreme nature of the film is its USP. For example, there's a gag where Cohen has to suck poison out of his own brother's testicle. That is low and immature, but it is funny in a low sort of way and is also delightfully extreme, so this offers comedic depravity that you can't get in many other movies.
This is a fun enough comedy and the edgy humor usually feels audacious rather than desperate.
