15 Deeply Tasteless Films That Will Offend Everyone

13. Ichi The Killer

Movie 43 Hugh Jackman
Media Blasters

This terrible extreme Japanese film was aiming to be tasteless, but unfortunately it ends up being both disgusting and completely meaningless, making it the worst kind of controversial cinema. There are two main ways in which the film is appallingly and unjustifiably offensive.

Firstly, the film's sexual violence goes too far. There are many scenes in which men beat, rape and torture women (sometimes while the title character gets off to it) without punishment or even any particular criticism, with the victims often being murdered immediately after. This essentially makes a spectacle out of sexual violence, which is utterly disgusting.

Secondly, it's depicts a mentally ill young man (Ichi) being psychologically tormented and manipulated by someone else in order to become a killer, so its treatment of a mentally impaired character is also intensely unpleasant. This is a movie which displays rape and the mistreatment of vulnerable individuals as entertainment, with no real criticism of the appalling behavior of many characters seen in the film.

Extreme cinema is often great, but this one is morally reprehensible and it doesn't even use its content to say anything, like Audition (another film by director Takashi Miike) did.
