15 Depraved Movies That Are Incredibly Difficult To Watch

12. Antichrist

Lars von Trier is no stranger to courting controversy with his movies, but even by his own transgressive standards his film Antichrist represented something of a benchmark in cinematic depictions of people sliding into a moral abyss of sexually aberrant behaviour. Von Trier regular Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Defoe play a couple grieving after the death of their child who elope to their cabin in the woods to try and overcome their suffering. Instead, they succumb to the worst psychological drives imaginable as their sins become manifest in masochistic sexual behaviour which includes genital mutilation. It's questionable whether Antichrist can hold the philosophical weight von Trier was clearly aiming for (critics were certainly divided upon its release, with many appalled by the "new low" the Danish director had plummeted to), but as the first entry in what is unofficially known as the "depression" trilogy it certainly elicits the correct emotional response from the audience.
