14. Transcendence - Johnny Depp Showing Acting Range
Ok, the film still looks slightly strange and quirky, but it makes a helluvah change to see Johnny Depp in a film that is neither directed by Tim Burton or just typecasting him as a weirdo. Judging by the trailer, it suggests that Depp may be able to display some low key acting, at least at the beginning of the film, anyway. Depp plays a leading world scientist who comes under attack by anti-technology extremists that oppose his latest creation - a machine capable of artificial intelligence. The above image, combined with the science-fiction narrative, proves that Depp will be given the opportunity to get his freak on some more, but at least it isn't the 'freak on' that we have come to associate with gothic themes and Disney narratives, with repeat turns as Captain Jack Sparrow and flopping in this year's The Lone Ranger as the wacky native American, Tonto. Of course Johnny Depp isn't the only reason to get excited for Transcendence, though, as the aforementioned The Lone Ranger proved that Depp doesn't possess the star power that he once held. Not only does the film look both interesting and thrilling from the trailer, posing many themes and questions; and not only is Depp helped out by a cracking cast including the likes of Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy; but the film is also the directorial debut of critically acclaimed cinematographer Wally Pfister, best known for working with Christopher Nolan on The Dark Knight trilogy, The Prestige and Inception. If that isn't enough to convince you to note down the month of April in your film diary, then I don't know what is.
