15 Essential Films You Might've Missed From This Decade (So Far)

5. Compliance

Another entry on this list which is inspired by a true story (the fateful words that usually mean the film is going to be a let down), Compliance is shocking in entirely different ways compared to the bleak and harrowing murders carried out in Snowtown. The manager of a small town fast food outlet receives a phone call from a man claiming to be a police officer who informs her that a member of staff has been stealing and needs to be confined on the premises until an officer can arrive. As the film progresses he begins to make increasingly unreasonable demands of the manager and her staff, which they nevertheless comply with in spite of their absurdity. The fact that this out of control prank call actually happened - and the man responsible was found to have done the same thing to many more innocent victims - makes the psychological trauma at the heart of Compliance all the more effective. It might be a low-key movie but it certainly packs an emotional punch.
