15 Essential Films You Might've Missed From This Decade (So Far)

3. Troll Hunter

It's easy to have a dig at The Blair Witch Project for its part in unleashing a stream of badly written and poorly executed found footage horror movies, but sometimes it's worth wading through the dross to uncover the occasional gem, of which Troll Hunter is certainly one. Part found footage part mockumentary, Norwegian production Troll Hunter sees a group of student documentarians setting out to make a film about a bear poacher, only to find themselves tagging along with a mysterious man who claims to hunt trolls. After building up the legend the trolls finally appear on screen in all their ugly, towering glory. Troll Hunter works best on account of the fact that it doesn't portray the trolls as evil monsters intent on killing humans (unless, of course, they're Christians) - there's as much pathos and a feel for ecological concerns as there is tension and you can't help but feel more empathy for the trolls than the humans who inhabit the film.
