15 Essential Horror Movies Since 2000 You Might've Missed
7. Lake Mungo
Lake Mungo is a rare breed of horror movie indeed - so convincing is it as a mockumentary that some people who saw it when it was first released assumed it was all real. While you might argue that this just makes them more gullible than most, it's still a testament to the way in which the film largely succeeds in its bid for authenticity. After her death by drowning, Australian teenager Alice begins appearing in photographs and home video footage. At first assumed to be a prank, before long the parents are taking things more seriously and after some investigating they discover a tape showing their daughter at the titular lake. Less horrific and outright scary than similiarly styled tales of the dead, Lake Mungo is a thoughtful film which is as much concerned with the nature of loss and grief as it is with things that go bump in the night.
