15 Films Audiences Got Right (But Critics Got Wrong)

12. Sausage Party

Saw Cary Elwes
Columbia Pictures

Rotten Tomatoes: 82%

IMDb: 6.2

Here's a truly fascinating case: critics really, really liked this raunchy, offensive, racist and anti-religion stoner comedy, but audiences were far more reserved. It's highly unusual for critics to like a film such as this more than audiences, but with this particular film, audiences were right. Sausage Party is a solid 6/10 and the RT score is too high.

Sausage Party, with its memorable characters, amazing ending and intelligent metaphors, as well as its impressive (if overly negative) meditation on religion, is a very good story and Rotten Tomatoes rightly described it as surprisingly thought-provoking. There's just one massive problem critics ignored: it isn't funny. Take away the painfully hysterical food orgy ending and the hilarious opening song and you've got a film that rarely produces genuine laughs and also coasts along on stoner jokes and endless profanity.

This disagreement between critics and audiences is hard to explain; perhaps critics were pleasantly surprised by the film's intelligent story while audiences just found it to be too much.

It's nearly unheard-of for critics to find a stoner comedy like this funnier than audiences, but unfortunately in this case the acclaim was misplaced.

Should Be Rated: 50%-60%
