15 Films Audiences Got Right (But Critics Got Wrong)

13. Anomalisa

Saw Cary Elwes
Paramount

Rotten Tomatoes: 91%

IMDb: 7.3

Audience scores are often more moderated than critical ones and this is always refreshing, since the lower IMDb scores of some films often reflect reality more. Critics adored Charlie Kaufman's Anomalisa and while it's a good film, the IMDb score feels more appropriate.

As a small and arty drama (told with unbelievably realistic stop-motion) this is the kind of film that will often connect with critics more, so the differences in the audience and critical responses are hardly surprising. In this particular case, there are a few perfectly valid criticisms which prevent the film from being perfect.

The film has great vocal performances, is often powerful and has an unforgettable puppet sex scene (if that's your thing), but the truth is it would've been better as a short film. With its somewhat pretentious vibe, frustratingly miserable tone and lack of action, it does feel exhausting even at 90 minutes, while it is also painfully cringe-worthy at times and the main character is irritating and unlikable.

It's a good film that's absolutely worth a look, but the critical acclaim felt a tiny bit excessive and the more moderated, but still good IMDb score fits it perfectly.

Should Be Rated: 70%-75%
