15 Films Audiences Got Right (But Critics Got Wrong)

10. Carol

Saw Cary Elwes
The Weinstein Company

Rotten Tomatoes: 95%

IMDb: 7.2

Another film critics adored while audiences were more understated in their praise, this one deserves higher than 7.2 on IMDb, for it is a fine film, but the 95% rating is too high and the IMDb rating is closer to the mark.

Great performances, stunning visuals and powerful moments aside, the snubbing of this movie from the 2016 Best Picture field wasn't quite as unjust as you thought. It is an overly slow-paced and curiously passionless love story that takes a frustratingly emotionless approach. The film's artistry and lack of emotional resonance is probably what made critics vote it up and audiences vote it down respectively.

It's one of those films which critics were right to praise, but maybe praised a little too much. Give that it puts artistry before a genuine sense of emotion, it is essentially a style-over-substance film and while there is nothing wrong with style-over-substance film-making when in the right genre, it isn't suited to a love story like this and, as worthwhile as Carol is, it would've been nice if it had made you feel a bit more.

Should Be Rated: 70%-80%
