15 Films Audiences Got Right (But Critics Got Wrong)
9. Piranha 3D
Rotten Tomatoes: 73%
IMDb: 5.5
This is an incredibly strange case. Critics actually liked a gore and nudity-filled B-Movie about killer fish more than audiences did.
It shows that critics aren't complete snobs, but unfortunately in this case they did give praise to the wrong movie. It's true that Piranha 3D offers some trashy fun, but it isn't very good and the original Piranha is funnier, clever and overall considerably better. For some bizarre reason, it has a lower rating (72%) than this remake.
Lacking in tension or plot, this sustains itself on all the gore and nudity. Unsurprisingly, the film runs out of gas long before the end and the novelty soon wears off. To be honest, even if you enjoyed it, it's pretty hard to defend it as anything more than a guilty pleasure, let alone a good movie.
Make no mistake: this is definitely a woefully misjudged Rotten Tomatoes score and the IMDb rating of 5.5 is bang-on point. There only so many times you can watch naked teenagers getting ripped to shreds by prehistoric piranhas before you give up and go watch Deep Blue Sea instead.
