15 Films That Took Major Strides In Animation
3. Shrek
Shrek was an outcast of its time but payed off. Spawned from the disliking to Disney's ever-so-common innocent kid's film, the crew at Dreamworks wanted to make something that referred to the modern day's referential tendency.
Shrek delivered a commentary on fables and deconstructed the seriousness and mediocrity of these tales by granting us a parody of the above sentiments. The film was filled with great independent songs, an inspired soundtrack, and characters who clashed against Disney's formula.
With the themes focusing on what's more suited to the early 2000's, Shrek pivoted then blind audiences to the importance of inner goodness despite social conditioning and appearance.
This is just one of the many reasons Shrek established Dreamworks as a competitor in CG animation against Pixar, and what earned it an Oscar at the Academy Awards in 2002.
