15 Films You Didn't Realise Were Based On Comic Books

9. Timecop

A History of Violence
Universal Pictures

In Timecop, a government agent called Max Walker travels through time to stop criminals from jeopardising the fabric of space and time. Before the story was a sci-fi thriller starring Jean Claude Van Damme, Timecop was a Dark Horse comic series.

Both versions of the Timecop start the same with Walker hunting a criminal who illegally time-travels to the 1930s. In the film, the criminal did this to take advantage of the Wall Street crash. In the Dark Horse series, he travels to this era to steal diamonds from a South African mine. In the comic, Walker returns the time-traveller to his timeline but goes back to the 1930s when he realises the criminal left his robotic bodyguard in that period, potentially compromising the timestream.

Another major difference with the adaptation is how integral Walker's wife's death is to the plot. In the comic, it is only vaguely implied that she might be dead. (It goes without saying but the film version also has way more scenes of Max Walker performing the splits.)
