15 Fixes To Save The DC Extended Universe

5. Plots With A Middle-Ground Of Complexity

The last two DCEU movies in particular have suffered with struggling to strike an enjoyable level of storyline complexity. Batman v Superman was largely regarded as overly convoluted for the story it really needed to tell, while Suicide Squad was deemed too simplistic, such that the narrative was easily forgettable and Warner clearly expected the movie to coast on its personality alone.

Finding a middle-ground is important, and Man of Steel has probably been the only successful one of the three in that regard (hence why its Rotten Tomatoes score is double that of either BvS or SS), so with the franchise batting such a low success rate in terms of narrative, it's clearly something that needs to be tightened up.

Chris Terrio is writing Justice League which is a little worrying given the job he did on BvS, but hopefully Geoff Johns overseeing things might allow the excesses to be reined in a little. Honestly, though, the greatest chance for a strong narrative comes from Wonder Woman, which is being written by Johns and fellow comic writer Allan Heinberg. If they can't get it right, who can?
