15 Fixes To Save The DC Extended Universe
11. Strike A Consistent Tone
Arguably one of the biggest problems the DCEU has had so far is tone: Man of Steel was criticised for being overly self-serious and lacking levity, Batman v Superman's attempts at humour were mostly weird and awkward (granny's peach tea, anyone?), and Suicide Squad was a clusterf*** of violent action, humour and unearned sentimentality as the film tried to push countless melodramatic backstories and the idea that these people are "family".
Writing a tonally even movie isn't easy even if Marvel make it look that way: integrating light and dark is a difficult balance that is usually hammered out in the script drafting stage, and perhaps that's the problem here: David Ayer wrote Suicide Squad in just six weeks and production was fast-tracked from that point on.
Perhaps with Geoff Johns now acting as the creative "Godfather" of the DCEU, the films might strike a more consistent tone both internally and also in terms of the wider universe.
