15 Foreign Language Horror Movie Gems Hidden On Netflix
4. Funny Games (1997)
Celebrated director Michael Haneke (The White Ribbon, Amour) remade his own film in English with Naomi Watts and Michael Pitt. But his German-language 1997 original remains the better of the two versions. It focuses on a wealthy married couple who travel with their young son to their beautiful but isolated holiday home. Once there they are soon greeted at the door by two initially friendly, well-dressed young men who quickly reveal themselves as menacing intruders who put the family through a night of horrendous physical, emotional and humiliating ordeals. Haneke has lots of tricks up his sleeve namely having one of the captors break the fourth wall to proclaim that we as the audience "are on their side" to slam home the point about audiences enjoying violence in movies too much. Its not exactly subtle and is a very tough watch indeed but fascinating and strangely rewarding nonetheless. Available on US Netflix
