15 Foreign Language Horror Movie Gems Hidden On Netflix
3. The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari (1920)
This stunning masterpiece of the unique German expressionist era of silent cinema is a staple of many-a-film study course. But otherwise if you're not familiar with it or have skipped past it on Netflix thinking it didn't look particularly interesting then let me tell you it's damn worth your time. It explores the story of a young man who recalls his memories of a traumatic experience he had with this wife when they went to visit a mysterious exhibition at a town fair. There, the enigmatic Dr. Caligari presents his hypnotized somnambulist Cesare. When Cesare predicts the mans friend will die and his prophecy comes true the very next day, Cesare becomes the prime suspect but is the Dr. actually the won controlling him? Its still a chillingly effective film even almost 100 years on, full of striking visuals and an otherworldly sense of creeping atmosphere. Oh, and fans of Martin Scorseses Shutter Island might recognise a thing or a two from it Available on US Netflix
