15 French Horror Films You Won't Forget In A Hurry

6. Trouble Every Day (2001)

Trouble Every Day Shane and June are a young American couple holidaying in France. Shane is secretly looking for some people with whom he underwent experiments with in a clinic when they were students. They have been left with an all consuming urge to eat flesh. Shane can rein in his appetite but he is horrified to discover that Core, a fellow experimentee, has succumbed to her urges and cannot control them. Her husband locks her up during the day but she frequently escapes and lures young men to their deaths via cannibalism. Can Shane keep his guard up and avoid a fate like Core's? Trouble Every Day is not an easy film. It caused a furore at Cannes with people walking out and/or fainting. A lot of viewers think the film is pretentious drivel, as it is quite slow moving and a number of things lack satisfactory explanations. However, it is the performances of the main characters which help to carry the film. Vincent Gallo is excellent as Shane, sexually obsessed with his new wife - wanting so much to cannibalise her - and trying to overcome his urges so desperately. Beatrice Dalle makes a brilliant Core - a woman who is aware of what she is and wants to die, but cannot resist her cannibalistic urges. The cannibal scenes where Core attacks men are chilling and gruesome - the relish she takes in cannibalising these men is nauseating in the extreme. But I still watched it. To the bitter end.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
