15 French Horror Films You Won't Forget In A Hurry

5. Inside (2007)

Inside Sarah, who is pregnant, is involved in a car crash in which she and the foetus survive, but her husband is killed. We flash forward to Christmas Eve and Sarah is on the verge of giving birth but has been made incredibly depressed by the whole affair. Then there's a knock at the door and a woman asks to use Sarah's phone. She is very insistent and a freaked out Sarah phones the police. The woman vanishes. Later on, Sarah goes to develop photos she had taken of the woman. The woman enters her bedroom and attacks Sarah's pregnant belly with scissors. She is clearly after the unborn baby. The two women engage on a vicious, violent campaign throughout the night. I won't say too much, but the film does include a scene in which Sarah uses an aerosol and lighter to burn off somebody's face. The film is helped by strong female leads Alysson Paradis (Sarah) and Beatrice Dalle (doing crazy as only Dalle can do), who have very demanding roles. It is a genuinely scary film that garnered considerable critical praise whenever it was first released. A typical product of the New French Extremity, Inside is a solid film, both well-written and directed. It is also based on a novel premise and goes against the grain of most horror conventions (for example - mad men chasing women).

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
