15 French Horror Films You Won't Forget In A Hurry

11. Haute Tension (2003)

Marie and Alex are heading to the latter's home to study. All seems kosher at first, until a mad axeman enters the home and slaughters Alex's family in a highly gruesome fashion. Marie and Alex manage to escape and hide in the killer's truck. They drive away and the killer stops at a gas station. Marie watches the station assistant get brutally murdered and ends up chasing the killer's truck. He forces her off the road and she flees into the forest where she manage to bludgeon him to death... The first time I watched Haute Tension (also known as Switchblade Romance), I found it to be absolutely riveting, satisfyingly brutal, gory and full of suspense. And this is still true whenever you watch the first three quarters of the movie. But the now infamous twist in the final moments of the film spoils things. Alexandre Aja is a very talented director and it's possible to enjoy the film on a pure visceral level, but I cannot wrap my head around it. Nevertheless, Haute Tension has a wide fan base and a cult following. I would still recommend that you watch the movie up until the twist.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
