15 Great Film Franchises Ruined By Too Many Sequels And Remakes

The absurdity of a movie franchise being born off the back of a theme park ride should have had people worried from the beginning. Somehow, the sheer silliness and uniquely comical take on the idea of pirates took the world by storm in 2003 as Johnny Depp breathed new life into a career that was far from fledgling, but was in need of that one swift kick into a higher gear.

Too bad that kick into a higher gear has now turned into half a dozen shifts back down into reverse.

While Depp has been keeping more than busy in the decade-and-a-half since, his decision to return to the franchise time and time again has begun to do damage to his reputation and resume that came of it in the beginning.

The first film in particular, with the second and third to be argued, is a fun ride and a fantastic display of story-telling that can come from a unique character point. But there's only so many times that wacky Jack Sparrow going on a crazy old adventure can work.

Not only has the box office slumped with each new addition after the second (which actually spiked quite high following the success of the first), the series has fallen critically with each release.

Culminating in the disappointment of Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2017 that got the lowest reviews of any in the series, from both fans and film buffs alike.

And there's another on the way. Great.
