15 Great Movies From The 2010s That Are Frustratingly Underrated
13. Suspiria
Plot: In this remake of Dario Argento's 1977 horror classic, an American student goes to a dance academy in a divided 1970s Berlin and discovers something extremely sinister is going on there.
While everyone was focused on A Quiet Place and Hereditary, most missed out on the true best horror film of 2018: Suspiria. Poetic, visually stunning, utterly haunting and truly beautiful (in a messed-up sort of way), Suspiria is also one of the best horror remakes ever.
Although it's undeniably self-indulgent and the historical context doesn't always add that much, Suspiria is still an incredible horror film and the polarizing response it received, with only 66% on Rotten Tomatoes, doesn't make an awful lot of sense.
Whatever its flaws, it's difficult to deny that the film's themes are fascinating, the performances are brilliantly enigmatic, the dance sequences are stunning and Luca Guadagnino's arguably Oscar-worthy directing is nearly Kubrickan in its awesomeness.
Suspiria is ultimately no more pretentious and self-indulgent than many other art-house films which were far more acclaimed, so the many negative reviews it received feel remarkably unfair. Let's just hope it becomes a cult classic in the future.
