Featuring the pre-007 voice talents of Layer Cake star Daniel Craig, this futuristic French neo-noir suffered for unfair comparisons to Frank Miller/ Robert Rodriguez’s blockbuster comic collaboration Sin City, released a year earlier, but the contrast between both films couldn’t be clearer than the slick, visually sumptuous contrast of this flick’s crisp black and white rotoscoped action.

With a convoluted (and classic noir) plot which takes in gangs, drug deals gone wrong, and an aging scientist who may have discovered the root of immortality, this kinetic thriller is a more thoughtful and morally ambiguous beast than its American predecessor, and benefits from some beautiful production design and stunning stylized visuals, as well as typically stellar performances from Craig and future Game of Thrones star Jonathan Pryce.
