Coming from French auteur Jean Luc Godard (and providing the Forever Young one hit wonder with their moniker, weirdly), this hard to categorize New Wave effort is essential viewing for sci-fi fans, but somehow almost always left off lists of the genre’s best efforts.

Following a secret agent through the titular city’s labyrinthine dictatorship, this stylish flick combines elements of noir and sci-fi to create an entirely original vision of a futuristic dystopia which remains slick and effortlessly cool decades after its release.

Shot in black and white, the twisty thriller follows the aging secret agent through a strange conspiracy which implicates authorities at every level, but it’s less about plot and more about critiquing the state's overreach which Godard witnessed coming from governments of the time.
