15 Great Sci-Fi Movies (Nobody Ever Talks About)
1. Dark City
Directed by I, Robot’s Alex Proyas (he also made Knowing, but we're polite enough to only whisper that fact), this dark dsytopian nightmare may be the single most obvious influence on the aesthetic of the Wachowski Sisters’ Matrix trilogy, but that’s not the only reason this futuristic neo noir deserves your attention.
Featuring a stellar central turn from A Knight’s Tale villain Rufus Sewell as the protagonist whose reality in the eponymous metropolis unravels before his eyes, this story of shadowy conspiracies is a reality-bending chiller whose influence can be seen in everything from Minority Report to the more recent Altered Carbon, and its nihilistic worldview is a bracing rejoinder to more optimistic depictions of our near future.
Embrace the darkness, baby (well, not to the extent of Knowing's terrible ending).
