15 Greatest Ever Horror Movie Villains
2. The Thing (The Thing)
John Carpenter's most frightening piece of cinema to date. The Thing isn't the first time we see the titular monster wreak havoc on an Antarctic research expedition - the first appearance came in the form of The Thing From Another World in the 1950.
The 1980s version is, however, arguably the best, with practical effects galore and plenty of sickeningly manipulated organic beings in the mix: spider heads, melting dogs, and skittering limbs included.
Hiding in plain sight by infecting lifeforms it comes into contact with, The Thing is scary as we never quite know where the next attack is coming from, or if it's already too late for everyone on screen. Even the ending leaves it somewhat ambiguous.
