15 Greatest Guilty Pleasure Movies Of The 1980s

12. Private School

Joysticks 1983
Universal Pictures

From one skin-heavy 1983 teen sex comedy to another. Matthew Modine and Phoebe Cates head up the cast as students of neighbouring single-sex boarding schools who fall in love, and plan to have sex for the first time, rendering them both a bundle of nerves and uncertainties.

While the central romance is played surprisingly straight (and seems likely to have been a big influence on later teen sex comedy hit American Pie), everything surrounding it is bawdy as all hell. The meandering plot largely centres on the boys' tireless efforts to catch the girls naked, in which they frequently prove successful.

It's all very voyeuristic, and naturally more than a bit sexist... I feel like I should be putting in a 'but' here, yet there isn't really much to be said in Private School's defence in this regard. Still, the juxtaposition of the largely sincere, sensitively-handled love story and the sleazy peeping-tomfoolery makes for an odd yet enjoyable mix that just screams '1980s.'

Yet while Modine and Cates are the names everyone remembers, Private School is really stolen by two other actors: Michael Zorek, as the principle comic relief Bubba (pretty much made out to be the lead in the trailer below); and future Saw star Betsy Russell as the vampish Jordan, the focal point of many of the film's most voyeuristic moments, notably a bedroom striptease and a topless horse-riding scene.

Ben Bussey hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
