15 Greatest Heroic Sacrifices In Comic Book Movies
1. Yondu - Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2
When it was revealed ahead of the release of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 that Michael Rooker was going to be returning for Avengers: Infinity War, Yondu's seemingly inevitable dead meat status int he sequel temporarily - and confusingly - seemed to fade.
But in hindsight, Yondu always had to die. As the script so wonderfully established, he was the real father Peter Quill thought he was looking for - he taught him everything he knew, he was responsible for his personality and a huge slice of his formative memories. And unfortunately, finding that meant that he had to be dispensed with, because Quill would never be allowed a stable relationship - it's just not who he is.
He's Han Solo - who couldn't stay with Leia or have a normal relationship with his son - and the idea that he and Yondu would go off into the sunset to play catch and share real affection was never happening. Still, watching him reveal why he always protected Peter through incompetency (even when it meant he was ostracised by his crew and saw his loyalists killed horribly) and then killing himself so Star-Lord could live was pure, emotional gold. Particularly when Cat Stevens' "Father And Son" plays after his funeral.
At least he got his "I'm your daddy" and "I'm Mary Poppins, y'all!" moments before he left.
