15 Greatest Horror Movie Comedies

2. Shaun Of The Dead

What We Do In The Shadows
Universal

Shaun Of The Dead is a loving send up of the shuffling zombie sub-genre and a love letter to Romero. It was a big break for director Edgar Wright and writer Simon Pegg, essentially transposing their TV sitcom Spaced to the big screen.

Shaun is a loser and underachiever in the eyes of his girlfriend and acquaintances, happy to coast into his 30s on trips to the pub and a minimum wage sales job. His flatmate and best friend Ed being the only person who looks up to him and whose life seems even less impressive.

The opening segment covers the usual sitcom tropes, a break-up, drinking and varying social rivalries between the group. Shaun and Ed, not unlike the soon to be marauding zombies, shuffle through these scenes hardly noticing the transition of those around them into the undead. As society descends in to madness Shaun manages to step up to the plate and becomes defender of his small band.

For fans of the zombie genre there are plenty of nods to the classics of Romero and the cast are a veritable who’s who of Channel 4 comedy - there is a particularly memorable scene when our survivors bump into another group in the chaos.
