15 Greatest Horror Movie Comedies
1. What We Do In The Shadows
What We Do In The Shadows showcases the great talent New Zealand has for comedy horror. It is very funny and pretty gruesome in places and certainly on par with Housebound from the same year – another excellent Kiwi comedy horror.
It cleverly uses the mockumentary format and is brilliantly executed by co-directors/writers/stars, Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. The plot is sparse and relies on the great characters as we get a look at the daily lives of vampire room-mates.
These are no Twilight vampires, they are beings hundreds of years old, out of touch with modern life and struggling to fit in to a society they equally want to be a part of and prey on. It plays with the tropes of the vampire myths and the ensemble cast play out a master class in comedy; they dress badly, they struggle to cope with domestic life, they fight and argue and show all the flaws of humanity whilst remaining convincingly inhuman.
What We Do In The Shadows remains very underrated by general viewers but certainly deserves to develop the same cult status afforded fellow New Zealander Peter Jackson’s early comedy horrors.
